NIE number: What it is and how to proceed to get it
The NIE is just the identity number assigned to each person in exclusive, to identify all foreign people.
It will be assigned to all foreign people that want to reside in Spain coming from EU (+EEA + Switzerland) and from not EU.

For EU citizens
For all the people from the European Union, plus European Economic Area, plus Switzerland, if they are self-employed workers or employees, students, pensioners or family members (spouse, ascendant or descendant), they can reside in Spain without a special permit. Likewise, when the residence period is longer than three months, they are obliged to personally request, before the Foreigners Office, the inscription in the Central Registry of Foreigners where a Certificate of Registration will be issued immediately, which will include the name, nationality, address, NIE and the date of registration.
In the case of Barcelona, the presentation of the NIE application will be made in the Foreigners Office of Barcelona, always by appointment, which can be arranged on the web: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/icpplus
For the EU citizens the office will be “Oficina Rambla Guipuscoa”.
* Notice that some browsers can give problems to access the official pages of public administrations. In case you get a window saying that it is an unsafe navigation, click on the Advanced button and then “continue browsing” to accept the “unsafe” navigation. If you do not do this step you can not connect to the web.
You can obtain one of this NIE’s:
- Non-resident (not a card just a number written on a paper): For non-resident such as people who come to set up a company, to study, buy a flat, buy a car…
- Resident/Permanent NIE card: Demonstrate economic means and have private medical insurance with coverage in the country, or start working for a company and Seguridad Social. The assessment of the sufficiency of economic means will be made individually and, in any case, taking into account the personal and family situation of the applicant. Sufficient proof of compliance with this requirement shall be considered to be the possession of resources that exceed the amount set by the State General Budget Law each year to generate the right to receive a non-contributory benefit, taking into account the personal and family situation of the interested.

- The application form of the NIE and the Certificate of Registration can be obtained at the following link: http://extranjeros.mitramiss.gob.es/es/ModelosSolicitudes/Mod_solicitudes2/18-Certificado_Residencia_comunitaria.pdf You have to complete it and sign it in duplicate.
- Copy of the full passport or Identity card valid and current and the original (in the case of the passport, a copy of the page on which the photograph is taken will be made; in the case of the identity document, a copy of the front and back will be made on a single page).

- Private health insurance or EU health card
- For employees one of this options:
– Employer hiring statement or employment certificate, including, at least, the name and address of the company, tax identification and contribution account code.
– Employment contract registered in the Public Employment Service, or communication of the contract and its conditions through the CONTRAT @ platform.
– Registration document or situation assimilated to the registration in the corresponding Social Security system or consent to the verification of the data in the files of the General Treasury of the Social Security. - Self-employed:
– Registration in the Economic Activities Census.
– Justification of its establishment by registering in the Commercial Registry.
– Registration document or situation assimilated to the registration in the corresponding Social Security system, or consent to the verification of the data in the files of the General Treasury of the Social Security or of the Tax Agency. - Non-lucrative:
– Proof of having public or private health insurance contracted in Spain or in another country, provided that it provides coverage in Spain during its period of residence equivalent to that provided by the national health system. Pensioners comply with this condition by providing certification of having health care available to the State for which they receive a pension.
– Documentation that proves to have sufficient resources for him and his family for the period of residence in Spain. It can be accredited by any means of proof admitted in law, such as property titles, certified checks, documentation justifying obtaining capital income or credit cards with bank certification that proves the amount available as credit of the aforementioned card. - Student:
– Enrollment of the public or private education center, recognized or financed by the competent educational administration.
– Documentation proving that you have public or private health insurance. You can provide a European health insurance card valid for the period of residence and enable you to receive the necessary health benefits from a medical point of view, taking into account the nature of the benefits and the expected duration.
– Responsible statement that you have sufficient resources for yourself and your family members, for your period of residence in Spain.
*Important note: when documents from other countries are submitted, they must be translated into Spanish or co-official language of the territory where the documents are presented.
For non EU citizens
For all the people from countries not from the European Union, plus European Economic Area, plus Switzerland, that want to work or reside in Spain more than 3 months they will have to process a visa at the embassy of their country of origin. In that visa you will be assigned a NIE number. Once you arrive to Spain you will have one month to apply your TIE card (foreign identity card). Please be aware that once you arrive to Barcelona you will need to ask for an appointment to apply your TIE. Because of the demand, this appointment can be given months later. The one month period will freeze until you finish your appointment.
